Shield loose on struts

2009 FE5, 102,500 miles. I just pulled the front wheels off to inspect the brakes, I noticed the shield on each strut was loose. It just slides up and down easily, not attached at the top or bottom. Is this normal?

Also, the hub wiring cover is torn on both driver and passenger sides.

Yes it is normal; the dust cover seats itself when the car is on the ground and the suspension is under load. and hmmm IDK how that wire cover could have gotten torn. Does it just slip off so its easily replaced?

It is OK. The dust shield should cover the hole that the shaft goes into.

However, your shock appear to be leaking.

If the dust shield bothers you you can zip tie in like some replacements have. There is a bumper that is supposed to hold it; OE is under the shield new ones are over it.

The wiring conduit is the fireman's belt.

I don't think so. Maybe if I were to disconnect at the hub, and pull the pins out of the connector. Don't really like that, though.

Hmmm... I didn't see it leaking. What are you seeing?

Fireman's belt, I should try to close it up, you think?

Thanks guys, I haven't done anything suspension related yet.

Fireman's belt: you don't need it, unless the suspenders break.

If anything it should be down, put a zip tie above it to keep it downish; it's function is to keep dirt out of the shaft seal.
