I may need to replace a CV Axle. I usually go to my local Autozone but theirs get poor reviews stating frequent re-failures. Should I go OEM on this part?

My issue is a loud hum. I raised the front and don't detect any play at the wheels so I'm going to investigate the CV's. Thank you.

 

Based on many threads over the years, a loud hum usually ends up being a hub bearing.

You didn't state year, mileage and previous repairs so hard to say.

CV axles rarely go bad on the HHR's. Now if your's has a torn boot, that could have caused early failure. But normally it seems bad axles are not very common.

 

Yes, my understanding is, if you can feel any play in the hub, it was bad quite a while ago. Very tight tolerances for the hubs.

 

I replaced my hubs, still had that shake, I bought Cardone axles, they're brand new, went right in, included the axle gland nut.

 

Get rebuilt axles. Ignore internet reviews; remember who writes them out of the thousands sold.

 

I am probably going to replace axles soon. For the auto trans, are there two different part numbers for the axles or do they fit both sides and how does that work in relation to the stub shaft? I would think that because of the stub there would be two different axles, though I have never had them off the car to see.

 

On my 2007 Auto they were the same part number.

So both OEM axles have stub shafts to be swapped?

 

Only the right. Some people are lucky and it stays in place.

 

According to the rockauto site, it says for the Cardone unit to remove and replace the inner shaft on BOTH axles. This is why I was confused that both axles are considered identical. Again, I have never had the axles off the car, so I dont know what they look like. For the left side is the male end already inside the transmission?
