Perhaps more leverage, then just your fingers

The shop manual just says "remove the cable ends from the lever".

You might try a PM to fastsuv, he is still around.

When I removed my engine/trans (2006 HHR LT 2.4L) a couple of years ago, I just pulled them off the ball.

Yes, I also could not pull them off by hand and was reluctant to use more force for fear of breaking something..

However they popped off by using some leverage under the cable ends with a small pry bar against the trans housing.

So my trans will not move side to side. So much so I broke the shifter. miraculously found one at the junk yard as they dont make them any more. Had it all fixed and working. Next day wont go side to side. How do I remove the metal bits on the top of the trans where the shift cables connect. To clean and referb the mech there I think that's my issue. Thanks. Hope this gets seen.

It’s an ‘07 LT , so , have you sprayed any type of lubricant on the metal control portion of the shift levers?

Yes PB blaster and wd40. As soon as they sit for any time frame it locks up. Is it easy to pull off the trans and like take apart and clean up.

Perhaps FastSUV will chime in , he just changed out his manual transmission, perhaps he has photographs of the transmission out of the HHR

That would be extremely helpful. Finding parts for this thing is getting increasingly hard or and picture or video on any media outlet.
