Today I replaced the problematic leak in the passenger’s side output shaft seals.
As we know in the 4T40E and 4T45E which I have in my 2011 2.4 litre automatic, there is a cv axle, stub shaft with ring clips , a cup seal and an outer seal that seals the cup to the transmission case.
I see the cup seal leaking to the cv axle , it was leaking from the stub shaft , where there is no flexible seal, just friction between the cup and stub shaft. I installed that cup last May , 2022 and saw the dripping on the driveway a week or so ago.
Another member here had questioned if a Detroit Axle 986m-ax was the right part as it looked different, well if the stub shaft stays in the transmission, that’s because his axle just had the female splines . The Detroit axle part has the seal cup and the stub shaft machined into the axle resulting in eliminating that leak point into the cup and past the cv axle.
here is the stub shaft in the top photo, if that is scored or has damage from axle seal, you need a new one, note the price in CDN , plus shipping, about $40.00 to me in Canada
in the bottom photo see how that stub shaft goes through the cup seal
in the middle photo inside the cup is where the leak was
Here we see the stub and cup area are machined into the cv axle , eliminating 2 places to leak and that price is USD works out to $106.00 CDN and free shipping to me here in Canada. I bought mine from Amazon.ca , same price $106. Better then installing an expensive part that’s going to leak again, soon!

Reason: House keeping
It’s a great idea, as you might remember I’ve changed cup and seal several times over the last 3 years.

The US Amazon post, it’s clearly only designed for the right side , automatic transmission CV axle. Now I’ve got a spare for the other side!
