I replaced right hub,c/v shaft new clips and seal w/ collar and seal set to right depth. Drove fine for 700+ miles. A couple of days after doing left side both c/v shafts came out of tranny while driving. I made sure both were locked in all new parts etc. when I changed all the parts. waiting for new stub shaft before I attempt to re-assemble. Have changed c/v many times over the years never seen this. Control arms are newer and tight. Didn’t have any problems after I changed the arms a few months ago.

 

I am confused. Did both come out?

The right side has a stub shaft.

I can't think of a scenario where it is possible for them to come out when properly assembled and proper parts.

 

My wild guess. Wrong shaft(s). Too short.

 

Yes they both came out. The right with the stub shaft still attached. The left came off the trans shaft. I didn’t finish the job on the left so it is possible but unlikely that my soninlaw didn’t get a good snap in putting in the left one. Like I said I’m positive that the right was secure when I changed it a while ago. It’s a 2011 LT auto 2.2.

 

You push to snap in palce and you should then grab the axle near where it goes into the transmission and give it a tug. If it comes out by hand (like I guess it would have if properly checked after install) then it was not fully seated. CV axles like it rough LOL. the circlip that hold them in is designed to be SNAPPED into place, not gently.

 

The right is supposed to be attached to the stub shaft when it comes out. The other end of the stub has another clip on it. 2 snaps.

Sorry, It can't happen if they are snapped in.

Do not test by pulling on the axle or you will pull the tripot apart. Pull on the tripot housing.

 

I compared the c/v shafts,they appear to be same lengths as old ones. I had the stub stay in the tranny on 3 different cars. I had to make a puller When I changed the seal and collar before this the stub stayed in also. I used new seal and collar and clips this time also. The clip still looks good. I can’t see if the slot the clip goes into could be damaged but the splines inside look good. Have you ever heard of damaged slots?

 

I never heard of one coming out without a prybar.

 

It must not have been seated into the snap ring.
