Ive had the shoes off twice in my HHR and I NEVER thought of using the hub as leverage to get the spring on -_- I am thinking this could be done with a pair of pliers with some long handles if you have enough grip strength.

No , the hook on the brake tool is a requirement, pliers would just slip.

I am tempted to try it. I will if I ever have a reason to and I will revive this thread XD

I have a pair of long pliers and the handle is actually curved a bit, might work :O

I’ve used visegrip locking pliers in the horseshoe spring, you need a extra set of hands!

Been there, done that. Spent an hour got bloody knuckles used words a sailor would blush at. Got the correct tool, done in 10 minutes including cleaning the backing plate.
