Try 4 quarts 5w30 Dexos and 1 quart Marvel Mystery oil, for 2,500 miles . It’s cleaned up my Ecotec engines.

If you are gonna add new oil to only flush again soon. Walmart has their brand Supertech 5w-30 full synthetic oil for like $16 for 5 qts. It is made by Big oil refineries for WalMart.

Agree with Don, AVOID Hi-mileage oils..

I only use M1 Synthetic in mine tho.

So i got a new timing chain installed, made sure the colored links were matched up with the timing marks on the cams and crank but when I turn over the engine by hand i hear a metallic popping sound.I'm not sure if that's the sound of the valves coming back up to their seated positions or valves colliding with pistons.I fear something is wrong with the timing. Has anybody else had this experience?

i was able to record a video of the valve train as I turned the engine over by hand and I could see that it is the intake valves making this popping noise when returning.

I hope that you are turning it clockwise (looking straight onto the harmonic balancer), otherwise the clicking is the chain jumping teeth.

Yes I am turning the crank clockwise. I just read on another forum that it is common for the intake valves to make a popping sound when they close if there's no hydraulic pressure to the lifters but it would be nice to have another confirmation of this before I button eveything up and start it for the first time.

Read thru this, double check your work . Did you deploy the timing chain tensioner?
Are you turning the harmonic balancer clockwise, only?
Was #1 at top dead centre on the compression stroke?

Timing chain tensioner has been activated. Turning clockwise only except a little counter clockwise to adjust give me chain slack when I needed it. Attached are pictures showing cams at 10 & 2 oclock positions. I have the timing cover on now but the crank timing dot is at 5 oclock. If you see anything out of sorts please let me know.

. Colored links don't match because I've been turning the crank by hand.

I do notice that the exhaust cam lobes appear to be opening the exhaust valves a little. No sure if you can see that in the pictures or not.

Do the ecotec engines have hydraulic lifters? I thought that they did not.
