Can you replace the 2007 2.2 ecotech into the 2008 2.2 ecotech?

Welcome!

I may be wrong, but my understanding is:

No, they have a different ignition system.

The 2007 was a one off engine.

I believe it is 2006 that has the different/older ignition system where the igntion module is the coil pack vs the later years with individual coil on plugs setup. If 2007 is truly a stand alone engine then so is 2008 since in 2009 the 2.2l got vvt and flex fuel capability. Not that Wikipedia is always correct but they show the 2007 and 2008 using the same version of the l61 2.2l engine.

I swear I remember seeing that 2007 had something between the 2 systems, but I can't find it.

So I will say I am wrong.

It is bad policy to use different years though, you never know if the programs are the exact same. The best thing to do is ask the folks at your local salvage yard, they have a program that tells what replacements will work.

My 2007 has separate coils, the 2006 had single coil pack

The coils wasn't what I was thinking about; I thought my failing memory had something about the way they are triggered is between the 2006 way and the 2008 way.

Isn't 2007 the year that has different connectors on the ECM?

Ok, my 2007 2.2 automatic LS , has two connections to the ECM, but is the 3RD connection for the ABS / TC which became standard equipment in 2008?
If the 2008 doesn’t have VVT , it should have the same sensors as the 2007.

2008 still has a gen 2 L61. The LE8 is the VVT version that is found in 2009 and up HHRs.

Both Crateenginedepot and Rock Auto also say the 2007 and 2008 are the same motor.
