I just returned from a trip from Washington, DC to Yorktown, Virginia. The trip was 555.7 miles and I averaged 31.2 MPG. Driving was on I95 and I64 as well as the backroads of the Virginia's Northern Neck (a peninsula nestled between the Potomac and the Rappahannock Rivers and spilling into the Chesapeake Bay.) You know, Jamestown, Yorktown, Williamsburg, Captain John Smith, Pochahontas. The Northern Neck is the birthplace to three of America's presidents - George Washington, James Madison, and James Monroe as well as Robert E. Lee.

Now back to the HHR. The AC was on all the time and driving on 95 and 64 I was going 80-85 MPH. I only saw two other HHRs. However, many people asked to look inside. It was a great ride and the HHR performed flawlessly.

That's better than my 3 mile trips at an average of 20 mph with 8 traffic lights.

I got 32.4 on my trip to St Joe Mo last month with the cruse on 78 with my 2.4 and the A/C on started on mid grade and added premium.. not much wind on the out trip, but on the way back with the cruse on 78, only got 27.5 with lots of headwind.

Too many hills here for me to get really good MPG with the cruise. The car is always dropping down a gear to maintain speed. On a good flat highway I'll use it but too many hill(billie)s here in Tennessee to keep it in overdrive.

What I don't get are these TV ads for the Saturn "ION" saying it gets up to 36 mpg on the highway. Am I mistaken or doesn't the HHR and the ION use the same engine? Is it a difference in gearing that make the difference?

The Ion is probably a lot lighter than the HHR.

At what mileage did you guys start seeing such high MPG???

I rarely get to drive the HHR, but my wife drives it everyday. She has a 50~ mile Interstate commute (75~ mph w/ AC on), and maybe drives 10~ miles a day around town. She is getting high 24's to low 25's. About 700 miles on the car so far.

I was hoping that she would be close to that 30 mpg mark seeing as though most of her miles are highway.
