Did you reset the mileage indicator before that long trip? I've never seen the mileage that some have, but I have gotten 30MPG when driving 65-70 and without the A/C on.

I will fill up today or tomorrow and reset then... I just get a bit skeptical of always hearing that people are getting 30+ on the HHR... especially the 2.4. I also do the math when I fill up and it is good mpg but not as good as some claim around here.. I could see getting this mileage if I was to go from Portland to Seattle or to the Beach but not everyday use. Maybe when I reset the mpg indicator all will change.

I haven't had mine long, about 3-4 weeks, but regularly get 29 in my commute to work (40 miles each way, mixed 2 lane highway with stoplights, and rush hour traffic). I've got the 2LT. My best mileage so far was with 93 octane; when I tried 87 octane it dropped from 29 to 28.
I couldn't wait to get it out on the highway to see how it did, but driving about 100 miles with cruise control set at 70, I ended up getting only about 26 mpg, my worst yet (it was a little windy). My husband then made the same drive next weekend, no cruise control, and got 30-31.
Right now it's got 89 octane in and is back to 29 (reset at each fill up). We manually calculate it too, and the readout is very accurate.

I got 35 once in an LS. But that car was a rental I got to take to Missouri before I bought my car. My 2LT averages 24 to 26 in mixed driving on 91 octane. I calculate my mileage at every fill up and have a computer program that keeps a running average.

On my Gettysburg run this past weekend, I got 24.6 on the way out. I had premium in it and already had some miles on it. Filled up at the Sheetz at Rt 15 & Rt 30 with regular (87). I reset the DIC & got 31.5 on the way home. 140 miles each way. I normally get 20-21 on the back and forth to work run of about 8 miles each way.

BTW, I was running the PATPK about 70-75 all the way.

Just a quick question on the seafoam. I use Lucas fuel treatment regularly ( I think too much now ) and have noticed that I am getting black carbon-y shiznit in my tailpipe. I think the lucas is doing its job cleaning. I am going to stop using it for a while and see if it cleans up.

Does the seafoam black up the exhaust tip? Also, tell me how many miles you have on the car and if you would, please give your oil cap and dipstick a sniff. Smell any gasoline smell at all?

Hunter, do you have an auto or manual, an do you monitor your Instant MPG. Everyone in here with a HHR (20, 2.2, 2.4) should be able to get 30+ on the highway rollin under 65 mph. If not let me know, YOU are doing something wrong, or your car is.

Maybe so, BUT this is a car designed approximately 32 years ago, using 1970's technology with low compression, push rod, and carburation, probably even bias ply tires... yet it exceeds the EPA fuel economy rating of the vast majority of cars manufactured today. Safety and crash worthiness not withstanding, my point was and is that we really haven't come very far in 30 some odd years from a pure mpg standpoint.
