5 Speed Shift Knob/Boot Question...

Hey everyone,

Has anybody replaced the shift knob on their manual transmission HHR, and if so, what kind of knob did you use? The stock knob is just hollow plastic, so I'd like to find something with a little more weight behind it. Also, does anyone know if there's a way to attach the shift boot to an after market shift knob? GM seems to have used some special sort of connector on the stock knob. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

Hey Robert4380, I have no idea what kind of HHR you have, but I have an HHR Shadow Edition with a Chrome top to the 5-speed manual shifter, and I rather like the stock one that came in the HHR. I can see how much one of those would run if you would like?

TWM short shifter

The class way to go is to go to the TWM short shifter and purchase a weighted shift knob from them at the same time. My legs are short enough that my hand would collide with the leather seat when I shifted into 2nd gear. The shifts were too long and I had the seat too far forward. Since I can't get longer legs, I opted for shorter shifts!

That stock plastic knob is just ok. Mine has had problems with the chrome(lol) peeling off, which I have controlled with clear nail polish. So far no problems with the knob comming off, but I am not really impressed with the oem toy like knob.

Shift Knob...

Officer,

Thank you for the offer, but I think I have the same shift knob as you already. It's the round sphere, with the top half chrome plastic and the shift pattern shown on it. The chrome on top is just a plastic cap, and mine keeps coming off because 3 of the 4 prongs underneath that hold it seem to have mysteriously broken off, so the chrome cap wiggles around since it's just held by the one fastener that's left. I'd still like to get a different shift knob, but I might just end up getting a replacement factory one since my car's still got about 4,000 miles left of the basic 3/36 warranty.

To whomever mentioned going with a short shift kit... I do like that idea, but I looked up one and it says that it drops the height of the shift knob by 2 inches. That's a lot! I'm pretty tall so I sit kind of far away and my hand naturally lands where the stock knob is now. If I had to reach down 2 inches lower, that seems like it wouldn't be comfortable for me.

Short shifter height

The height of the shift knob is adjustable. TWM supplies a spacer kit. There is a limit to how tall the shifter can get with the stock kit, and I'm not sure how tall that is. However, TWM also makes shift extenders so you can get the shifter to be even taller than stock if you want! I prefer mine a bit shorter (vertically) than stock, but it's just a matter of personal taste.
