Well, Dexos is defined by the brand names of the additives and is a licensing scheme. In order to use the "Dexos" name the oil must have specific brand name additives then pay a licensing fee to GM. In return GM recommends exclusive use.
So, you could say "they are making money off it" or "they know what they are talking about".
The bottom line is: Anything labeled "DEXOS" is consistent with anything else labeled "DEXOS".
The old designations were from paying API (American Petroleum Institute) for the right to label. They had to meet or exceed standard tests. Some may be better than others.
Depends on who you pay.

Just my opinion, but... mobil 1 goes for about $30 a quart, standard (non synthetic) oil goes for around $7 a quart. I can get an oil change at Walmart for around $28 with synthetic blend oil and filter. changing it every 3K miles is still cheaper then the cost of Mobil 1. Don't get me wrong, Mobil 1 is a fine product and I have used it in many of my cars. But at 200K miles, it doesn't make sense to switch for me. Your results may vary, and I am OK with that. I don't do any high speed driving, or tow a 7,000 lb trailer with my HHR so I am probably OK with what I got. a 2006 LT2 and I am not in a hurry to get where I am going. I just enjoy the ride!

No. Mobil 1 is not $30 a quart. The 5 quart jug of Mobil 1 is about $28 at my local Wally Mart.

Google is your friend. Mobil 1 is widely available for about $30 - $40 for 5 quarts.

google is your friend unless you read it wrong. Last time I purchased Mobil 1 it was $12 a quart, that was 6 years ago and regular oil was about 2 bucks a quart. I misread the price of mobil 1 as for a quart, not a 5 quart jug. Walmart sells more oil than just about anyplace else and they are notorious for keeping the price low.

My thanks for all the people who corrected me. It is good that you are keeping us honest.

These days, it really isn't too much more for synthetic, unless you go to a "quick lube" type, They are completely ridiculous, last horror story I heard is they wanted upwards of $80 for the oil plus labor and shop towels. They advertise $25 conventional oil changes, then upsell.
I guarantee they pay less than you do at Walmart.

If it has a Dexos label it is the same Synthetic formula as any other oil with the Dexos label. That is the point of the designation.
I don't think you will find 5W40 in a conventional. Somebody told me that, anyway, but the same guy swore that my HHR didn't have a solid connection from the steering wheel to the rack and pinion; "drive by wire" he declared "I work on them you are a lowly parts guy"..
