Airbags didnt deploy
I do understand that no matter what rating the car has, to many other factors come into play for any guarantees in a crash. Car has every option that was offered,Full airbags all round. Just suprised the side impact bags didnt deploy as it was quite the crash.
Wife was sitting at the exit of the local mall and a car jumped a windrow ( big pile of snow piled up from snow removal graders) flew 20 feet in the air and hit the drivers front quarter panel sending her car spinning 20 feet down the sidewalk into a pole. Witnesses said it was like someting out of the dukes of hazards. 2 feet further back and that car would have landed in my wifes lap and instead of coming home ... who knows?
Shiny, Black , polished ,all that wax, for nothing, I loved that HHR, Damn drunk drivers, hope the other driver enjoyed their eveing in jail

+1
Airbags are not designed to deploy in every collision. Like has been said before, the rate of deceleration determines whether they will deploy. That's why the manufacturers put crash beams in the doors and floor and continue to recommend seat belt usage every time you drive or ride in the vehicle.

one has to fully understand how airbag sensors function before expecting them to deploy at any major impact.
in simple terms, air bag sensors basically work with a ball-bearing attached to a spring inside a tube. The weight of the ball-bearing causes the spring to expand during deceleration. The spring has to expand a certain distance to allow the ball bearing to make contact with the end of the tube. In a side impact, the ball bearing has to extend the spring far enough to the side to make contact with the tube to ignite the side air bags. If this occurs, the air bag will deploy. so speed, inertia, rate of deceleration, and direction of momentum all play a role in whether or not the air bags will trigger. remember, these cars have 2nd generation air bags now...they dont ignite/deploy as easily, or as forcefully as the 1st gen airbags used to.
Bottom line is this-if the air bags did not deploy, they were not suupposed to deploy in that type of accident.

I'm not sure whether the data can be retrieved by the regular scan equipment, but the insurance company may have access to it through crash reconstruction experts. Near-deployment events are also recorded in erasable memory, but should be accessible for some time. There's been a lot of discussion about this in the Corvette/F-body communities, since the data recorded can be/has been used for evidence in prosecutions.
Even armed with this data, you as an individual still can't determine whether the system operated as intended, as the algorithms that GM has developed as a result of crash tests and real-world data from wrecked vehicles, to determine when the airbags should deploy, is closely guarded.

thank you for taking my "5th grader explanation" which is about the extent of my air bag knowledge, and explaining it in detail.
I can now understand more about GM's reputable "black box", which has long been a topic for debate amoung(you guessed it) Corvette owners.
seriously...awesome explanation.
Is the "box" you speak of the one located directly below the cup-holer area of the console, seen here?

cuz if it is...that's a whole lotta wires goin' in.

That's the one, all the airbag-related connectors are color-coded yellow. They're always bolted solidly to the bodywork, to accurately transmit a representative acceleration of the passenger seats to the sensor.
Welcome to the site. I sure hope your wife recovers and has no lingering aches and pain. Sounds like the car should be totaled and that sob should never be allowed to drive again and have the book thrown at him. Mrs. WEST rest and have a fast recovery.
