General HHR Discuss anything related to the Chevy HHR that doesnt seem to fit into the more specific categories below.

Anybody know of a V8/V6 transplant or a convertible conversion HHR?

I wonder about making the 5.3l displacement on demand GP GXP and Imp SS motor and tranny to keep it FWD but get the V8 in there. Custom half shafts and mounts and such but that would be more easily done then the RWD alternative.

It wouldn't be any fun if it wasn't RWD....

I agree but then again one could be done a lot easier then the other so I would say you might actually be able to enjoy the car more with the FWD option.

You'd have to gut the engine bay like a fish to make it fit.. & it'd be nose heavy..

Not to mention all the electrical yada, yada.....

Same goes for the RWD version so once again I still stand by my earlier statement of the FWD version would be easier to make happen. If you do RWD you have to notch back the firewall and make a huge hump for the tranny and a smaller hump to the back for the driveshaft and then you have to move the fuel tank to fit the rear end yada yada yada lol.

But the proof is there, the rwd v8 has been done. Im not convinced the fwd v8 version would fit.
It is interesting to hear of the development version with the 3.6 though. That engine does well even in a heavier camaro.

I see a lot of people saying that there's no drive shaft tunnel... Have you looked? It's there, the exhaust runs through it.

I understand what you are saying and agree with you that it is proven to have been done. If you consider the length of the V8 motor vs it's width the width is smaller then the length so if it can fit length wise why would it not fit width wise? One can easily cut the inner wheel wells and make a bar/tube inner well support. To fit the RWD v8 they had to cut the firewall the same way I am suggesting would be possible for the inner wells.

Look at all that room between the headers and the inner wells.

In this one you can see the rear end carrier they had to cut metal to make room for.

Yes there is a very small and LOW tunnel for the exhaust but I wonder if it is not adequet for a driveshaft . Year One thought NO so they made a larger tunnel. It certainly will not fit a tranny and would need room in the back for suspension/rear end travel.

Behind that we bolted up a heavily modified TH700R4 which ran to a 10-bolt rear out of a 4th-gen Z28. We modified and strengthened the HHR’s front suspension and added coil-overs and big brakes. Out back we modified a 4th-gen f-body control arm/torque arm setup to work in the HHR, of course adding better components and coil-overs for adjustability. In between the front and rear suspension we did a bunch of cutting and rewelding! We had creat our own trans and driveshaft tunnel, and build mounting points for the rear suspension. And just in case the 585-horses made by the LS6 wasn’t enough, we added a big NOS kit.
