What do you think the dealers use to base their offer?

Being that I sold cars for 15 years..I can assure you they dont give a darn about the NADA or KBB books. They use a black book which is an average of auction prices from the region they are in. NADA or KBB is used for pricing a used car off their lot. But a true value is derived from the auction books. Why would they give you a lot more for your car then one they can buy from an auction? There are of course "one off" situations that are different but after working in the new and used car sides in 4 states...they all used the same lil black books. And everyone is right...the fact the HHR is in rental service and a lot of companies have purchased them has flooded the market and lowered the price of the cars. I hope this info helps.

Word, we use the same for our fleet vehicles. First off, never trade a vehicle in unless you just have to. They will not offer you crap for it. You would be lucky to get low book value from KBB or NADA. If you trade it in, prepare to get screwed and please don't complain about it.

Private party value on mine is:

E-$16,020
G-$15,030
F-$13,830

SRV is $18,225

I'm happy with my $17,000 off the lot purchase. I bought the size vehicle I needed for my day to day commute. This was not purchased to be our primary travel vehicle, although we do use it on trips with the DVD system I added.

If you bought your HHR as an investment you have just learned a lesson for the future. A car is one of the worst invesments you can make. Sure the HHR is cool and cute and different, but it is a sub compact station wagon in reality. They get used and abused and go downhill from day one. Sure, there will be a cult following for the HHR and some of them will be kept pristine and customized to within an inch of thier lives. Other people will end up with one because there was one on the car lot they went to and they could afford it. Time will tell if the quality is there with the HHR or not but keep in mind the HHR is a Cobalt stationwagon with a nice body on it.

I agree with everything you said!! The point was that these are used and will give someone a good idea what they will be offered. when I've traded in a vehicle I took the ammount for the three and averaged them and the dealer's offer was always very close! That being said, I usually sell mine myself, you always get more for it.

Amen! I need something a bit bigger and tougher. I'm gonna stop by the dealer and see just what the numbers look like for me and just how bad the hit is gonna be...if its $2000 or lower, I'll go for it.

I just ran some quick #'s at KBB - I'm glad I don't have a PT - as their value didn't hold up as well as the HHR...

The value drop for the SSR was/is MUCH worse - I'm glad I bought both of my Chevys as keepers!!!

I did a SmartBuy from GMAC. Hopefully two years from now my 2LT fully loaded will be worth more than $9,000.00. Otherwise, I'll pay the $250.00 and walk away, but I do want another one. By then the SS version should be out.

I think alot of this was covered on another thread but.......

You do realize, you are comparing "apples to oranges". MOST people bought their HHR for retail price or something very close to it. To compared the "wholesale" price to the retail paid price is a little deceptive.

The real comparison, if you look at wholesale pricing, is WHAT THE DEALER PAID for the car. In your case, crowbar, probably about $3000 less than the "sticker". So it now becomes a $19,000 car. Still a lot of depreciation....but not as bad as the original figure.

But also, WHAT IS THE RESALE VALUE of the same used vehicle? Most of the 06' reselling by the dealers around here are within about $3500 (depending on options and condition)of the original MSRP. That's not to bad.

Remember, the less a dealer pays for your trade the MORE he makes on the resale of that vehicle.
