I've run out twice. The 2011 has less buffer on the warning than I was used to on the 2008.

The 2008 got 60 miles after the low fuel warning, the 2011 only gets 45.

GREAT point about the fuel pump!

I try to fill mine up at the 1/4 mark. I can only rember my low fuel light comming on once since I bought the car. I have been the 1/4 and the red a couple of times but not often. I have only fun out of gas twice in my driving (over 50 years) once was a stuck fuel gauge (63 Renault Dauphine) and the second time a nonfuncting fuel gauge when some one had siphoned the gas out of the tank (59 A H Bugeye Sprite, fixed the gauge a short time later when I discovered that the battery was installed backwards it was Postive ground.

Just to add some more info....I filled it today after the "LOW FUEL" light came on yesterday...I think I drove around 10 miles after the original warning...I filled it today and it fit 14.955 gallons good for $61.00..It stopped on its own at $60.94 and I went the extra $.06.

The only problem is I should have stopped at 8 gallons to see where it would be, but I wasn't even thinking about it....

I went through my fuel records. The most I ever pumped into my 06 HHR was 15.6 gallons and that cost me $30... Those were the days

Great point.
Just for the record I never go below an 1/8 the of a tank usually not even below 1/4. As mike mentioned the fuel pumps are cooled by the gasoline In the tank.
That's why if I do get down to 1/8 or less and I have been driving g for an extended time I will drive home let the pump cool down then fill the car the next morning.
Whenever someone tells me there fuel pump went on them I always ask did you run the tank down really low and then fill it within a day or so before the pump went? 9 out of 10 times the answer is yes.
Hot electric fuel pump and cool gasoline from underground do not mix well.

Also 2005hhrauto mentioned to me that each mark on the gauge is about 2 gallons which makes sense.

Yesterday I actually had to do an unpowered landing at the pump. 2011 LT took 15.609 gallons. The dam thing only got 50 miles when in said 65 left

I learned a trick; when it starts bucking and stalling pull over and turn it it off for a few seconds then restart to get a few 1000 more feet. That worked 3 times for about a quarter of a mile. I hate it when I run out with the cheap gas station in site. I guess the pump needs to cool down.
