Auto or 5spd? Which to get?

Thinking about getting an HHR. It sounds like the 2.4 may be the way to go. Just wondering if there is a performance difference between the auto and the 5spd? I also noticed the auto looks like it gets better gas mileage in town than the 5spd. Is that right???

This car will be for my wife and although one of our main concerns is gas mileage, the "fun" factor also plays a part. We both love stick shifts.

If you guys love sticks - that's the way to go. I have an auto, and on SoCal fwy's shifting in stop-n-go traffic is no fun at all! The 5-speed has a bit of a "long-throw" gate on it, but there are short shift kits available to remedy that if you want a sportier feel.

The auto has the awesome "I" gear (Intermediate), which makes it much more peppy around town and on windy mountain roads - it's very cool!

Whichever floats your boat - I'm sure you'll dig it!

Thanks. What about the 2.2 vs 2.4? I test drove both of them, but unfortunately my test drives were not the best conditions to be able to "feel" the difference.

Mileage is the same for both - go for the 2.4L - you can feel the diff.
The 2.4L has variable valve timing which provides a noticeable torque increase.

Also, I forgot - if you get the auto, it comes with a remote start keyfob, which I use evey day! It rocks.

OK cool. Now I'm just trying to figure out the different packages. LT, 2LT, spring edition, etc... Sooooo confusing.

Anyone that you know of had problems with sunroofs in these?

Is the leather real leather? Or is it pleather??

I have had no problems with my sunroof so far. The leather is real but not the highest quality of course.

I rented a 2.2 - bought the 2.4, it was definitely peppier. I found the leather seats to be more comfortable (and heated - even though you probably get as much cold weather as we do). I wanted a 5-speed but I couldn't find one with leather seats within 3 hours of me. I'm perfectly happy with the auto - actually I'm glad I got it because, I, too, use the remote start daily (just remember to leave the fan on "high"). My sunroof has had no problems, either.

Be sure to get the running boards, though.

I bought the 2.4 and automatic with remote start,I don't enjoy shifting gears any more in heavy traffic (traffic gets worse all the time),, A trip to North Carolina gave me 28 mpg.... The choice is yours!!!!!
