Actually my understanding of the GM rating is the Max. tow rate is 1000lb Gross.
That weight includes everything added over car and driver with a full tank of fuel.

You would have to add the weight of the hitch components as well.
If you add a 200lb. passenger that also counts against the 1000lb. gross figure.
If you carry additional items in your HHR that also counts.
Your net weight capacity could be as low as 700lbs. or less.

Can you cheat on that max. 1000lb. amount ??

Sure you can, but if you have a serious accident you will be held responsible for overloading your vehicle. Even your Insurance Co. could refuse to pay.

To me it is not worth the Risk.
