anyone know where a spl. filling nozzle to add new fluid, local shops cannot get one the dealer wants $180.00 to change trans fluid I would rather support a good indepant service shop?
Checking and topping off the HHR’s Auto Trans fluid is very similar to a Manual Transmission. On a Manual Transmissions there is no fluid dipstick, just like the HHR.
On the HHR there is a check fluid level hole sealed with a bolt on the right side of the Auto Transmission. Also there is a vent hole somewhere on the top of the transmission. I haven’t found this vent/hole yet, but believe it to be on the left side.
According to the FSM the procedure is a bit more complicated than any Manual Transmission I have worked upon. As the engine has to remain running during the whole procedure of removing and replacing the sealing bolts. If not you will loose fluid when you turn off the engine.
Start and warm vehicle, remove vent bolt, remove sealing bolt, check level and add fluid through top vent hole if necessary to bottom of check hole, let excess drain from check hole, replace the bolts and turn off engine – done. Vehicle must be level and there may be some problems with access to the holes as the FSM say to use a lift.
I see no reason for this to be a dealer only procedure. Your service shop may not have done this yet and may not want to try. I found no mention in the FSM as to any special tools needed to add fluid. A pump with hose or a funnel with hose I would imagine would work.
I have a few more years until I will need to change my fluid. In the mean time I will confirm the hole locations when I am doing other work to the vehicle.

I'm ecstatic that I don't have to touch my tranny fluid for at least 100K miles! Having gone through 3 transmissions in my last car and doing fluid changes every 30-40K miles, let's just say that I'm FINE with not seeing another tranny dipstick for a while!
