Backup engine...

Hi all. I have started thinking about purchasing a replacement engine for my 2008 2.2 panel just as a precaution for the future. I love my panel and I am planning to keep it for a lot longer.

At this point there is nothing wrong with mine at 101k miles but I keep reading these threads about bad head gaskets, timing chain guide issues, etc. I have used Mobil 1 exclusively since day one and dont really expect any problems but I thoought why not be prepared.

I have read lots of threads but cant put enough together myself to know for sure so I am asking the experts.

Which engines can I use? I know diffferent years have different quirks which is why I ask. If I can find a good used 08 2.2 for a descent price obviously that would be perfect.

Next question, since I will hopefully have plenty of time, I know I should replace things such as timing chain, guides, water pump, tstat. but should I go the extra mile while the engine is on the stand to replace the head gaset? I am sure the cost would not be that much more. I can do the labor myself so it will only be parts.

Also should I be looking at maybe doing the 2.4 intake swap or just not worth the cost?

Any input from you guys is greatly appreciated.

Thanks much,
Vinni

Don't take the "horror stories" too much to heart Vinni, and remember that because we are the place to go for HHR tech info, you'll see posts about various "worst case scenarios".

The number of posts relating to engine issues is not an indicator of the statistical probability of your engine ever suffering a similar failure.

With only 101k on your engine, and using Mobil 1 from new, I'd not lose any sleep over potential failures.

Buying and storing a backup engine is overkill, with 489,000 HHR's built plus their Cobalt, G5, and Ion platform cousins on the road....Ecotec engines and their parts will be plentiful for many years to come.

Just keep on maintaining it like you're already doing, and enjoy driving it for many years to come.

There is nothing to fear but fear itself, and the parts companys and auto recyclers will have engines and gasket sets for quite sometime to come. I had the same thought when BoB posted his 2.2 for sale, then I remembered I still have a spare 350 V8 and 700R4 under the bench from my pickup.

Thanks for the replies. Makes me feel a bit better. I have had no issues with the engine and it still purrs. Changing the cam chain tensioner a while back made the start up rattle go away. I did that thanks to you guys on the forum.

This place is awsome. I dont always post but I am here alot.

Hqppy Thanksgiving everyone!

If you do it, head gasket would be incredibly smart.

is there a mileage or age of vehicle to change the gasket?

also, i dont have this "rattle" that everyone speaks of..so im guessing my chain is fine? or i have the 'newer' style tensioner? or should i change it anyway? Im at 95,000kms (~60,000miles)

No, if it ain't broke........

But, if you are going to get a junkyard engine AND have the time, money and inclination it's just smart to do it before the fact.
