Ok, I'll throw my 2 cents in too. We have a 2007 bare bones LS, with a five speed, so no remote start capability. Bought this car new, primarely as a vehicle that we could tow behind our motor home, which we do. Turns out the car is far more drivable and comfortable that either my wife or I anticipated, so we use it for almost everything, and our other two cars sit in the garage and collect dust. Mine has the 2.2, no complaints, I can say with the manual transmission, it is never short of power. As far as seats, I love leather, we have two cars with leather, and live in a pretty hot climate, and the leather is no problem with AC. I would suggest if you go with leather stay with a light color. Our HHR bare bones as it is, has cloth, which I really have no complaints about either. It, the HHR, has been trouble free, except for the instrument cluster, which went nuts, and was promptly replaced by the dealer, and has never been a problem since. I put tires on it about a month ago, though the clock says 27,000 miles, there is another 12,000 or so towed miles, and the original Firestones were getting a little too thin for my comfort. Other than that, nothing else has been done to it, so it has my vote.

I'm at 28k on my SS, have had the LNF Turbo Upgrade for about 20k, and have yet to have an issue of any kind.

As for "best ride for the money", all depends on what you're after. I think all trim levels are reasonably priced for what each one offers.

I love the HHR because it is one of the few wagons I could get in a stick. I never tire of the Turbo, though wish I had bought a bare bones so I could drive it in the winter. Since you're in Fla, you don't have my issues with deep snow and traction.
My trade in was a Firebird which I still miss dearly. But two small children changed my tune in a hurry and I don't regret getting the "HH CAR" as my 3 year old calls it.
Not really had any problems with it. 20K on the clock.
