curious question regarding 2.4 engine

The fuel pump is in the fuel tank. There should be a vibration damper installed on the fuel supply line going to the engine to prevent transmission of any resonation from the pump, down the supply line.

Mine has a "supercharger whine" when I accelerate with the AC on...kinda reminds me of a M561 I drove back when I wore a uniform.

HEEHEE!, well, Ok, If it the sound that I think your HHR is making, Then I know it's just how the engine is, I love my engine sound!, I love everything about Wheelie! =)
