I went to the bank this morning and on the way, ran over some wood scraps that had fell off someone's vehicle. Didn't think anything of it, just hoped there weren't any nails in any of it.

So I get home and decided to wash the truck. I get to the rear passenger side tire and noticed a piece of wood sticking out of it. I tried to pull it out, but it was in there pretty good and didn't feel like messing with a flat. So I took it to a tire shop nearby.

Well the tech takes it in the shop and after a few minutes comes and gets me. He says "Sir, that piece of wood was only stuck in the tread. It doesn't look like it went through at all. I pulled it out for you though and now you're good to go."

So I thank the young man, get in the truck and drive home, thoroughly embarrassed. But hey, at least now I'm not driving on a plugged tire.

Don't feel so bad.
I had something similar happen, where I found a screw in the right rear. It looked like a Drywall screw, but I was not loosing pressure.
I got into the tire shop, and they took a look. It was a little self-tapping screw, no more than .5 inches long. It had not penetrated either.
they pulled it for free!

If you had pulled it out, it would have found a way of becoming a 12" wooden stake. Better to be cautious and look foolish then hit the freeway with kowing a screw/stick was stuck in a tire, have a blowout and be foolish.

Yep don't feel bad....couple of years ago I noticed a screw sticking out of one of my tires.."hmmmmmmmm that should not be there, let me pull it out"

In high school I was a tire repair expert... plug, patch etc. Believe me, if you wanna protect our investment, always pay a few bucks extra to have the tire taken off the wheel and properly patched on the inside. Plugs can lead to blow outs, they don't do well with the high speed/heat that tires put up with when handling and at highway speeds.

Better safe than sorry.

Other than some little locally owned gas stations, no one will plug a tire anymore anyway. Too much liability in our lawsuit happy society.

The ol Union '76 down on the corner will do it for 9.95! Not that I recommend it!

The dealership I deal with still does it, but they use the combination plug & patch and will only apply it if the puncture is in the tread area.
