Drive an HHR through a Goodyear Blimp Hanger
Drive an HHR through a Goodyear Blimp Hanger
I am putting this here as more people will see it. This is something that is for a good cause and something you can take you HHR too and do what no other HHR has done.
Anyone near Akron Ohio on Friday Dec 3, 7 PM -9 PM and Sat Dec 4, 10 AM -6 PM can drive their HHR trough the Goodyear blimp hanger at WingFoot Lake in Suffield Ohio. This is just east of Akron just off 224.
The hanger built in 1917 is home base for Goodyear fleet. It is where they build all the blimps and service them. Right now it houses the Spirit Of Goodyear. The hanger will be open and you will be able to drive through it in your car with a donation of a toy to the Toys For Tots. This has never been done before and you will drive under the blimp as you pass throught the hanger. If all goes well this may become a yearly thing. But for now it is only a one time shot.
So if you want to do something few people have done and would like to see a blimp inside and close up from your car stop out.
I will take my SS there and try to get some pictures.
I have been in the hanger before and it is really a neat place. I also have flown several different blimps and that is something I will always remember.
This is for a good cause and here is more info from TV5. There is a map on their site too.

Just to make this clear this is not the large Zeppelin at the Akron Airport. This one is smaller but from end to end can hold 6 blimps end to end. We will only drive through half of it since the other end in close and is climate controls to repair the envolopes and other parts. They rebuild everything and have enough parts to build 2-4 blimps it the need should arise.

Count this as one less thing on your bucket list!

This sounds cool, I found out about this today from a co-worker that heard about it on the news.
I'm taking the family tomorrow. Its kinda of funny that I find out about this on my hhr web site instead Goodyear where I work.
Aw. man! I will have to miss it today! Had a sump-pump problem when all the rain hit last week. Have people working in the house. I have a craft show on Saturday in Peninsula. Maybe next year!
The blimp flies directly over my house a few times a year. So cool!

I posted this here as there are so many here from Ohio and western PA that it would be an easy stop for many.
Where I live it is common for the blimp to come over my house and work a dozen times a day when they are out.
The best times are when the other blimps come back to be replaced with new ones and we can have 5-6 in the air at one time. Now that is something to see.
I hope if this works they will open the Lockheed Goodyear Zeppelin hanger up at the airport. I have only got in there once in my life time. You can not believe how big that one is till you are inside.
Being almost 1200 feet long and 200 feet high the blimp inside of it looked like a little toy.
I know Lockheed has been doing some lighter than air things there and still hope to build air ships that are about half the size of the building.
It that one is ever open for a tour I recomend this one. When inside think about the old Zeppelins like the USS Akron, USS Macon and the Graf Zeppelin that were either built or stored inside this great builting. They were nearly the size of the building it's self. I can't imagin those flying over 75 years ago.
I hope Goodyear opens the Wingfoot hanger for a walking tour. The repair room is neat. When I was in there I got to pick up a fin from the Spirit of Akron blimp. It only was 107 pounds from what I was told. There was little weight to it and it made me feel like superman lifting something so large. LOL!

This is so awesome! If I lived near by, or even if I lived just a little closer I would make the trip! Once in a life time ordeal, would be worth it just to see the looks on my kids faces as we drove under it...how I wish I was closer...
We are going Saturday.
Not sure if this will be a short line or long line so I don't know what to tell you. I hope it is a long slow line. That way we get more inside time.
Word to the wise. Take a friend or family and if you have a sun roof give em a Camera and stand them through it. That way you can get some good shots.
