In Ohio they wasted no time discouraging electric vehicles by charging extra for registration.

The wear and tear you vehicle causes on roads varies directly with distance driven and exponentially with vehicle weight. It would be more fair to pay for registration on this basis.

Burning fossil fuels imposes cost externalities on society, so that’s a better rationale for fuel taxes, rather than attempting to fund roads with fuel. The wasteful use in recent years with $2-3/gallon gas proves those taxes are too low. Maybe a price-stabilizing variable tax would be better.

By here in Ontario Canada we also have Carbon taxes in our fuel price for the burning 🦖 fuel!
on top of the road taxes.

@mongo Good used EV battery packs are not difficult to get. Insurance companies are incredibly worried about fire related liabilities after an EV is in an accident so they are quick to write-off EVs after they've been in an accident, even if the damage to the car is quite minor and easily fixable. That makes for a good supply of good used EV battery packs and other used EV parts to businesses who have taken advantage of this fact and have gone into the EV wrecking and used parts industry.

The fact that EVs are written off so easily by insurance companies makes me wonder about how costly they are to insure.

Hey Sleeper, How about an E- Harley ? The Amish ride electric bicycles that pull a little trailer. It's fun to watch the Amish women zooming up hills about 45-50 mph while leisurely pedaling.
You could build one with multiple Chrysler high torque starters with pulleys and a heavy duty serpentine belt. The batteries would be 2 (one on each side, where the side baskets would be) Cat 24 volt type.
When your biker buddies laugh at you, just tell them that I gave you the idea .They will understand !

John - new HD makes an electric thingie.. Came out about 7 years ago..

How much does a Harley Davidson electric motorcycle cost?

Why Harley’s New Electric Motorcycle Costs $30,000. The LiveWire is a giant leap for Harley, if only a small step for the motorcycle industry as a whole.
