Are you sure its your engine? That sounds like what was happening to my buddy Justins car and it ended up just being a loose heat shield. Thats where I would start, check your heat shield.

Generally you'll only notice a lifter noise at after a cold start-up while the oil is still thick and being pumped up to the lifters. Could be the transmission, I had several people here at the dealer tell me to go with the auto, as the manual makes a lot of noise.

I understand how annoying it can get. I had my blower fan go out and by the time I got there I could hear it over my radio at full volume. But its all fixed now :)

Something got stuck in it. I replaced blowers all the time and find all kinds of crap in them. Paper, plastic bags, leaves, hell if found a dead pack rat twice. The debris throws off the balance of the blower motor cage making it vibrate badly. Usually have to say the motor went bad or warranty won't cover it.

My dealership said the same thing, he said the oddest thing he ever found was a half melted used condom.

Push the clutch in when this happens and seeif the noise goes away.
If it does, it's the throw out bearing. Time to go see the dealer.

Just an idea...

I have the automatic with 300 miles on it and have noticed what I thought was a lifter ticking as well, checked the oil everything seems fine, no excess heat or any other odd noises, just that ticking that sounds too much like the lifters so it always grabs my attention.

Where is the heat shield you were talking about CH?

Your exhaust. I haven't got down under my HHR yet to see where exactly where it is. If you follow your exhaust you'll find it. If its loose it picks up the vibrations from the exhaust and makes an annoying ticking rattling noise.
