General HHR Discuss anything related to the Chevy HHR that doesnt seem to fit into the more specific categories below.

Everyone Knows the HHR is "rated" @ 1,000lbs.

Do you work for U-Haul or something?

You know, I could take a submarine down past it's rated crush depth, but I think that may not be a good idea.

No U-haul credentials here.

I do find the topic of towing interesting though.

The car may handle 2000 pounds with no problem, but hit something sharp on the road and cut a tire and you may find that exceeding the rating will get you into trouble very quickly. I was towing a car with my pickup, electric brakes, 2000 pounds below the rated capacity, and blew a near new tire. I ended up almost sideways in the other lane before it straightened out, luckily there was no other traffic on the road. My tire was cut by something and blew. I felt like one of the Nascar guys with a blown tire, it happens quick. Tow past the rated load and you may be fine, but have something happen and you'll be over your head in a hurry. This car isn't rated for it, don't kill someone to prove your HHR will tow more that Chevy says.

Yeah, but you still shhould never tow in OD. The trannie on my 1985 Impala 9c1 (cop car) is a 700r4 with a shift kit, which is known as a VERY beefy tranie. I made the mistake of towning a heavy trailer in OD...it overheated the tranie and blew the main seal. Rememebr, the fluid pump is spinning in relation to engine input speed, so in OD its not pumping very much very fast yet wwith a tow load it's also under heavier loads and generating a lot more heat. It's Towing 101, never tow in OD. I made a costly mistake and hope to help you avoid the same one. lol

If what you say were still true, why wouldn't the owner's manual recommend it? In the towing section, it does not recommend towing in the I mode. Today's trans are build differently and much better than even the best from 1985.

Always read the manual when towing. My Trailblazer says I can tow in OD if the its not constantly downshifting into 3rd. Most of the time I tow my travel trailer in 3rd. Every so often, I get condidtions that allow me to tow in OD. The excess heat is generated when the torque convertor can't stay locked and constant shifting is occuring. Keeping it in a gear that stays locked minimizes heat buildup.

If you really want to tow with this car to its limit, I suggest getting an auxillary transmission cooler. Its cheap insurance.

From the manual "Maximum trailer weight is calculated assuming only the
driver is in the tow vehicle and it has all the required trailering equipment. The weight of additional optional equipment, passengers and cargo in the tow vehicle must be subtracted from the maximum trailer weight."

Leon, you can state the facts all you want but the sentiment with some of these postings seems to be that GM doesn't know what their talking about in the owners manual concerning towing, weight capacities, towing with auto transmission only etc etc...

A teacher can inform the student of the facts, but the teacher can't make the student believe the facts.

Hopefully the people that choose to ignore the facts have a lot a faith, because that is what they will be riding on.
