hello from 80,000miles

Hello, I have never participated in a group like this before. I have a 2006 HHR LT model that has been a great friend to me since we were first introduced. The car has been a dream to own and drive but I have started having an issue with the motor fan going out which causes the engine light to come on and the cooling system to not work properly. Has anyone else had this issue? The problem started shortly after the odometer turned over the 80,000 mile mark. After 3 trips to the shop my mechanic won't fix it any more because he can't guarantee the work and the dealership mechanics haven't been able to find and fix the problem either. I hate the thought of having to buy a new car, I really love the shape and styling of this one but I can't afford another repair bill the size of my mortgage and run the risk of it still not being fixed. I wish Chevy still made this model. Any suggestions out there?

Welcome to the group!

Have you replaced the T-stat?
Have you checked the coolant level?
Have you thought about the water pump?
Have you changed the coolant, Dexcool is only good for 5 years (green is shorter)?
I think you are getting or only giving us part of the story, it has to be more involved. Somebody is holding back info.

I didn't do that on purpose, is it poetry?

And if it's the Check Engine Light that you mentioned that is coming on, you need to get the on-board diagnostics code downloaded from the car's computer. Most auto parts stores will do that for free. Once you get the code (ie: p0016) post it here and we will see what advice is forthcoming.

to the forum!

All very good advice above, get the codes pulled and post them up here. It'll go a long way towards helping us help you.

Welcome to the site. If the codes don't give you the answer and it is an intermittent problem you might check the wiring for a break or loose connection.
