HHR front end strength
we had freezing rain overnight and the roads were like an ice rink covered in diesel. I was using extreme care and came to an intersection with a major major state highway. I was only doing 25 and started braking well before the stop sign. I gently pressed the brake pedal and the ABS less 2006 LT locked up. I was sliding and there was nothing I could do. I looked to the left and saw a whole load of trucks coming towards me. I was around 100 feet from the highway and was still sliding. I slammed the gear shift down into 1 and the torque change started a right skid. There was nothing I could do and the car was completely out of my control. Bam ! The car slammed into a snow bank and came to a halt sideways across the road ! I really seemed to hit hard and assumed the worst - smashed up bumper, hood damage, broken head lamps, wrecked suspension/steering etc etc !! I backed out of the snow and got out and took a look - and you know what? To my delight, there wasn't even a scratch. No paint off, no bumper cracks, nothing ! Be careful out there guys !
Yea, that ABS does nothing in weather like this. I am glad mine does not have it. IMO I am not all that sold on the high center of gravity as it does make things a little tense while driving.
I almost buried my mother's Ford Explorer into a back of a pick up, I was able to cut to the right and went for a snow bank (many years ago, and its soft snow) but there was a mail box buried and i clipped it. Sucked but better then rear-ending a guy.

Once this weather starts to thaw, you might want to get the alignment checked. It may have taken a hit to the wheel more than the body. Probably didn't hurt a thing, but might now be out of allignment. Otherwise, great job of driving! (Might as well take the credit for the "save"
)
