or, could someone run a tape measure with the front passenger seat down to simulate hauling a long board. I can't get a sense of the length from the photos I've seen. If I bought one of these, I would need it to be able to haul the occasional purchase from Lowes.

Thanks in advance.

You can haul 8 footers easy. Just be sure to place a cloth or pad or something on the front dash. The 8 footers will rest on the passenger airbag.

I have had eight footers in mine and not on the air bag or dash. 1" of room left.

Yes be careful of your dash. That plastic gets chewed up very easily. Trust me, I know.

Years ago I put an 8 footer for a shelf in the computer room in my Saturn SL2 I rested it on the top of the dashboard, over the folder passanger seat, through the folded back seat, and into the trunk. As I slowly closed the trunk lid, I thought that it fit like a glove. Until I got into the car and saw the small crack in the bottom of the windshield. I guess it was 1/2 inch too long. Turned out to be a $500 shelf (and to make matters worse, the wood was several inches too long anyhow and had to be trimmed. Perhaps I should have let them cut it at Home Depot???)

This *VIDEO CLIP* from Mike at SoCalHHR's should give you a real good idea of what you can fit in your HHR!

This thread also has answers to your question!
What is the biggest thing you hauled in your HHR?
