install the running boards? or not?

I bought a certified HHR 1LT last month, it's a 07 model with 32,000 miles, the first owner was a rental company in florida. I am pretty happy with this car so far. Then I read a lot of things about splash protection here, so I take a look at the paint and hardly notice anything. But since I am in Michigan, winter could be tough for my HHR, so I am thinking of either the running boards or splash guards, or probably both.

My questions are, since I have little experience of DIY a car, will it be a relatively easy job to install the boards? if I install the boards myself, will that void the warranty?

Thanks in advance.

Yes to running boards!

I'm thinking about installing the mud gaurds. Just not sure about the look.

I would get the dealer to install, as then it's under waranty.

The boards are an easy DIY job and should no way affect the warranty.

Yes to both........ YOu can install both very easily, especially the splash guards.

Add another to the running boards, they really finish off the lower lines on our cars.

Tip for factory splashguards:
One of our SoCal HHR crew just put some on and found out that the best way to fasten them is to THROW AWAY the hardware that they come with. You have to remove the factory push in fasteners along the inner fender well and they cannot be reused. Get some new ones and use those to mount your guards, it works much better.

DO NOT PAY FOR THE RUNNING BOARDS!

Quote TSB (Technical Service Bulletin):

06-08-51-002B OCT. '07: Body-Paint Chipping in Front of Rear Wheels.

The dealer may not go for it. But if you can make a case about "preventing" the issue from occurring, they may agree.

Maybe ChevyMgr might know more.

Perhaps as I write this, the GM Gods are sending a virus to my laptop.....!

Good Luck.

GM may paint road debris damage one time, but I don't know of any cases of them adding running boards. The OP didn't pay for them when he purchased so adding them is no different then adding a roof rack.

GM just called virus has been sent.

So, how much do running boards cost?
I would love them, I just can't afford them right now!

Approx.......$400-$500 and then add cost of paint if not colored matched already.
