Its makes the PT a older, deformed half sibling of the HHR

It's an interesting thought.

GM buys the Chrysler arm of DaimlerChrysler:

Buick is replaced by Chrysler
Pontiac/GMC are replaced by Dodge
Viper dies. Finally.
Hummer is phased out and replaced by Jeep

Dodge Challenger and Chevrolet Camaro appear on the same platform in '10. Next generation PT Cruiser moves to Delta. GM scraps the G-van platform and retains contract with Freightliner for Sprinter vans. Newly redesigned Dodge trucks appear on the GMT-900 platform by '09 w/Duramax replacing Cummins. Pacifica replaced by Buick Enclave. Redesigned Chrysler/Dodge/Chevrolet minivans built on next-generation Chrysler platform because GM shuttered Doraville minivan assembly.

This speculation could go on for days.
