Oh oh...!!!
I went to put the shifter knob on the HHR today...slid right in place but once the set screw was tightened down and I thought it was ready, I couldn't get any movement on the release button. I took it off and with my finger on the button, and a thin screw driver pushing on the plunger inside I worked the button back and forth a bunch of times, it loosened up a bit but didn't seem like enough travel on the button. I could move the shifter in the car by pushing down on the white plastic plunger in the center of the shift lever so I assume the problem is in the knob it's self..??
Having electrical power wouldn't make a difference would it? The battery is out for the winter.

You could test with a 9V battery wired up to the fuse box.
You also need to press the brake pedal and have the key in.
With the battery out the car is in de facto "ant-theft" mode. Key locked in switch, can't move shifter etc.

Well Crap...I went down and hooked up the jumpers from the PT Cruiser to the HHR cables, shift button still don't work. I guess they put it together wrong or something...the chrome button is VERY tight.

The button is very tight, like I explained in the original post, it might be from the wrap or something put together wrong inside.
I'd love to find an exploded view of the shift knob but didn't have any luck.
Got it all wrapped up now to send back and it's no real rush, the Panel is put away until the salt is off the roads.

I'm sure they will fix the problem, and yes hibernation time for the panel! It seems to be forever! But that first nice spring day , you plunk that battery in , tighten the cable clamps, turn the key and fire it up! Yeah, that's always a good day!!
Unfortunately Oldblue is our everyday, 365 days a year ride, so that exciting day in spring is now the power wash the winter crud off, clay bar and detail day, still a good day just a whole lot more work!!
