Mine are rather beat-up as well, even after the dealer repainted them - the clearcoat and the color layer are flaking off like mad. So will give a quick sand, and flat black plastidip spray. Will remind me of my old 444.

Chip guard is mylar. GM has it. Its my understanding GM installed it on customers older car when they were having problems with the paint there. Now standard stuff on models.

There was an older fellow in town who had an HHR that he used to pull a 17 foot Prowler camper out west to his property with every summer.

He sprayed the bottom 4 or so inches, or so, of the bottom of his car with spray on bed liner. He then put a self adhesive inch or so wide chrome trim strip just above the black. He also covered the 'knee patch' as he called it with the goop. Personally I did not care for the finished look but he was happy with it and that's all that counts when you get right down to it I guess.

I thought about doing just the 'knee patch' on my HHR when my younger brother was doing his pickup bed but just didn't get around to it.

I have my doubts about plastidip standing up to stones.
I know it did not stand up to loading stuff when I tried it on my rear bumper.

I have the running boards that were supplied by GM for free after there were some complaints about the stone damage. The running boards do a great job, so no more stone damage, just a crappy paint job on the shields/guards.
