Exclamation Outside Temp Gauge

Because some members have raised questions about this, I thought I would post this little notice to technicians.....

Outside Temperature Indicator Changes

According to bulletin PIC3608D, some owners of the following vehicles may comment that the outside temperature display reading is inaccurate at times.

2004-08 Malibu/Maxx
2005-06 Pursuit (Canada)
2005-08 Cobalt
2006-08 HHR, Solstice
2007-08 Aura, G5, G6, Sky

The outside air temperature algorithm uses outside air temperature, vehicle speed and time the engine was turned off.

If the engine was off long enough or the current outside air temperature is lower than the stored value from the previous ignition cycle, a new outside temperature reading is taken and displayed. The outside air temperature continues to update every second as long as the outside air temperature is the same as or lower than the previous reading.

If the engine was not off long enough or the current outside air temperature is higher than the stored value, the last stored value will be displayed. Vehicle speed has to exceed 18 mph (29 km/h) for up to 5 minutes in order for the displayed outside air temperature to be updated. If the speed drops below 18 mph (29 km/h), the outside air temperature will display its last value.

wow who know gauging the temperature was so complex. Puts a whole new spin to how many people it takes to change a light bulb.

mine has always been from 3 to 5 degrees high and now the dealer doesn't have time each of my 70 mile drives from home it will never be fixed. Now that I am retired from the warranty.

I made 2 appointments during work hours and missed both due to work by 10 minutes. 30 minute drive each way.

Last time I give that dealer the time of the day and the service is not open on saturday.

That is excellent information. I have the FORD manual temp guage: You hold a rectal themometer out the window for a few seconds and then check it. Not fun on really cold winter days!

My temps always read about 5 degrees higher than what they should...(roughly) I had a period where the temp stuck on 66 degrees for about 3 days

Is this anything that the dealer can fix?(the being 5 degrees off)

I think that instead of the actual (sic) outside temp. the DIC should just read "REALLY COLD", "COLD", "WARM", "HOT", "REALLY HOT".
That should about take care of all the problems with the temp. being off.
BTW, Mine has been off too. Sometimes up to 10 deg. high.
