Poll: Will the hhr become a classic?
I don't think the HHR will ever be compared to the Corvair, just read the postings here, consumers are much more intelligent and know what they're looking for. Thanks for the memories, I had a 69 ChevyVan with 108" Wheel base. Was custom from the 350 we put in it to the Cragars, paint job, including the Keep on Trucking on the back with the T very close to the R and got stopped several times, but when they looked close they could see it was seperate. Wouldn't advise giving the cops a reason to stop but was still sweet seeing their faces when they realized I didn't put that on the van.
The Corvair today is a classic foot note to auto history. It today is look at as a positive car that got a raw deal from 65-69. Is is special and not like other cars.
It also is not worthless as some cars but you are not going to retire on it either.
The Corvair, Fiero and HHR are all special cars that will always have a place as a special car that is a affordable collectable. Just don't use the kids collage fund to buy one as a investment.
Any car today that can do as the Corvair and be worth twice the original sales price is something special even if it is not a lot of money.
You won't see a Cobalt do that.
Of all the "retro" cars, PT Cruiser will be the one considered a classic.
Don't get me wrong, I'm completely happy with the HHR, and I prefer it over a PT.
But the PT was out first (by several years), and I see a lot more of them on the road than HHRs...

I would have to say the original "retro" car would be the Plymouth Prowler. And as for as "retro" car considered a classic, I would have to say the Plymouth Prowler, Chevy SSR, and the 11th gen Ford Thunderbird. Personally the HHR will not be a classic, but neither will the PT cruiser. There are way to many PTs on the road and junk yards in a few will be flooded w/ them
It will always be a classic to some, but there's not enough of them and not enough interest in the parts world to keep them running forever. I hope to get a good 10 to 12 years out of it - just don't know if the 2.2 can deliver 150k miles before it wears out.
Personally, I'd like to see Chevy keep them until they can convert them to an electric plug-in for around town. Light weight and lots of cargo space - they would be great for store runs and short commutes. Electric front drive with batteries under the cargo box? ...just a thought.

Look at it realistically...what makes a car a classic..? Not us! Its going to take some young guys who happen to grow up with the car and happen to forget about it in later married/working/babysitting years only to happen across one in later later years and have flashbacks, buy it, rebuild it,,and waa-laa....others strat remembering and wanting one and the race is on.....the other factor is the history behind the car..the Stud has one..the 57 chevy has one...the Corvair definitly has one( thank you R.Nader)...the VW has a place in there too...but what does the HHR have? The most rented car in history? The most under-advertised car? It doesn't have anything other then a youngin with a memory....though, it may be remembered for the motor that powered it, but then so wil the Cobalts which were more popular andd the European cars that also have these motors...you old guys thinking your gonna retire on this car...good luck with that, its up to the youngins to make or break it..its n ot popular enuf..it even isn't widely known to exist! So park it,,,die and let somebody else discover this ancient 4 cyl turbo sitting in some out building thats in the shadows of the Jetsons parking complex.....and they can oo and ahh and turn it into a blender/BBQ grill.........I'l drive mine till the wheels fall off....
which may be in another 5 years at this rate and then I'll get whatever is on the market.....at this age we buy to play without any reguards on resale because we all know the car will probably outlive us anyways..sad but true and life goes on...drive it like you stole it but don't forget to pick up the BenGay and Geritol on the way there.......
