Question about the accessory port on dash...

I just got a Garmin GPS for my car, is it safe to leave it plugged in when im not in the car? Is there some kind of safety shut off for the HHR? (or maybe even for the Garmin?) Basically, im just wondering if I can / should leave it plugged in all the time. Any help is appreciated, thanks :)

I take mine out of the holder, when I'm not using it. Don't want to give anyone a reason to break into my car and steal anything.

As far as electrical drain- I leave my aftermarket XM receiver plugged in 24/7 and haven't had any problems.

Having said that, just so ya know- those GPS receivers are at the top of the list for thieves right now. I saw a news report stating that people's cars are getting broken into if the lowlives even see any sign that you might have one in the car. They figure that you've probably put it into the glovebox or center console, etc... they're even breaking in when they see the suction cup marks on the windshield. The receivers- which I love and own by the way- are extremely valuable because there's not much way to lock them right now. So, my advise is to not even leave it in the car at all and make sure there's no sign of it.

That's good advice. We just got a Garmin 660 a couple months ago and we never leave it unattended in the car. You living in Illinois, it may be the end of summer but it if it gets hot, prolly not a good thing for the Garmin. Just put it in it's little black sleeve and take it in wherever you go. Way too much temptation for those heisters.

It's also advisable to hide it's mount as well if possible.

Thieves are now just looking for signs of mounts and breaking into cars in hopes they find the GPS or anything else.
