Rear step/scuff bumper pad location??

I bought the rear pad seperate from the order cause it was cheaper to buy that way than order on the car. Just one question thou on its location. I have seen at dealer put in two spots, flush to the body, and away from the body to match the body crease in the rear bumper. Just wonder where it is suppose to go, the instruction really dont say.

In the little crease on the bumper that is the exact size and shape as the pad. I would take a pic for you but I'm at work.

Actually, my pad is a slight bigger than the crease, doesn't sit into it. I am prabably going to put it so it just covers the crease, looks the best to me. with the gate close you dont see the 1 inch gap to the body.
