My HHR had that problem when I bought it and I pointed it out to the dealer. The dealer thought that they might be able to get just the tread part but they were told by GM that they had to order the entire running board and replace the whole running board. I would hazard to guess that GM knows it is a problem and I don't think heat is the issue, as my HHR was purchased in early April and had just been manufactured and it doesn't get that warm at that time in Western NY. Anyhow, the long and short of it is that the dealer replaced my entire running board (driver's side) and no more problems.

ya know ..... since i first read this thread i started wondering what it would look like doing that whole running board with spray on chrome... If i can talk my wife into it i just might do that ..... Whats yalls opinion?

It depends on how well the spray on chrome will hold. Don't forget that it's a high traffic area and it may wear the paint down fairly quickly.

I would say just do the insert and leave the rest of the board its normal color.
