Do you have financing already or are you going to deal with the dealer. If you can get your own financing simply walk in and say this is what I have and am willing to pay.
Unfortunately, I think we are going to have to deal with the dealership on financing. We are looking to trade in her 2000 Alero GLS (junk). She has about $4,100 left to pay on that. Again the blue book value, for what its worth, has her car at about $4,500-4,800. It is in great phsyical shape and only has 45,000 miles on it. Right now it is running fine, but it just has too many mechanical issues. I didn't tell the salesman yet that we have a trade in. I want him to commit to a price on the HHR first.

Sounds like a good looking ride, I have Black, hard to keep clean, but when it is (for about an half hour), you need shades.
I don`t know too much about hagling with salespeople, and I probably didn`t get the best deal.
All I ask if you get it is, don`t call it the other Black Beauty... like someone else on the site...

Try to not do that. Go to local bank or better, credit union. You will be better off.

Sell first if at all possible. I could care less what the book valuse states, you don't have it paid off. And since you are now looking to finance through them. That's another angle for them to get you......

Once you tell him you have a trade, that changes everything. You can find the price the dealer paid (or very close) online. Yes, they are willing to deal. If you can go there with your finacing approved, you are better off. The less you have do at the dealership, the better.

One thing I can say is try to stay out of the dealership and talking to sales people. Use the internet. Search around dealer stock and email the internet manger. Have them give you the "out the door" price. They do not like to waste time and guess you do not want to waste time. We got our HHR about 1200 cheaper than the sales man qouted us. We did the same thing when my wife got her 06 Nox at the same dealership and walked out getting a smoking deal on it.
I will only buy any car using the internet from now on.

I agree with dbarberaz. I got a $600 discount for shopping on the internet. But, I also save $2,200 with 0% financing. You can also apply for GM financing there and get approval in a few hours.

The only downfall is the inventory on the internet is not always realtime. They may have already sold the one you really want so call to be sure.

Just wanted to post a follow up. After a fun week or so of car shopping she decided to go with the Corolla S. She has family that works at the dealership and we got a great price for a solid reliable car. I am a chevy guy and was still leaning for the HHR, but she is the one driving it everyday. I can't argue the price and she has a new car we don't have to worry about while she is going through nursing school. Thanks for all your input!!

Here's my chevy...........
