Smelling gas occasionally?

2 weeks ago I came out one morning and when I got in the HHR I smelled a faint smell of gas ( knowing about the fuel line rusting behind the rear wheel area ) I checked and was dry as well as the area on the ground. drove to the store and checked again and did the sniff test....nothing, same as when I came back out... dry and nothing. Didnt smell anything again until a few days later but this time was outside on the passenger side near the rear, pretty stong? The car has sat almost 2 days at this point and the smell was strong but around the gas cap area, no smell under or anywhere else and everything was dry? I removed the cap and the edge of the filler is a little rusty but all is dry as well as the rubber seal. I havent noticed any gas loss or wet spots in lots , just trying to figure out where it would be coming from? Its still hitting 80-90s outside during theday but nights are dropping into the mid 40s- 50s.....any ideas?

Clean the filler neck where the fuel cap oring contacts it. Replace the gas cap , with AC Delco cap, the Stant cap I installed failed after a week
