Thanks for the info.

It was the module that was bad, but I went ahead and replaced the fan at the same time.

I cut the module open to see what was inside.
As expected, a circuit board with some electrolytic caps, a couple TO-220 packages that are heatsunk to the aluminum body.
But there were also a bunch of surface mount components on a little circuit board.
I's a pretty elaborate gizzmo...and why. Give me a temp sensor switching a relay, and save me a bunch of cash.

I realize this is an old thread but does anyone have a photo of where the module is located on a 2008 HHR SS? Found one on Amazon for $122. Looks like a simple two- or three-plug device.

It is the blocky black plastic thingy with wires going in and out mounted on the fan shroud.
If you can find more than one thing with wire going to the fan motor you are not looking at a HHR. Maybe should phrase that as "there is only one set of wires going to the fan".
# 3 in the image. Found by GoOgling "HHR SS fan shroud". The same as posted in #10.

What module? Start a new thread.

As explained earlier in this thread; the SS does not have a relay controlled fan like the 2.2 and 2.4 it has a PWM module instead, for an infinitely variable speed.

I guess these threads don't expire. I find it hard to read through an old thread so if the new question is not fully explained I would ask for them to start a new thread. I will not do that anymore.

Sometimes, I’ll read through and determine if a new addition to an old thread should be separated, in this case , it’s not a lot of reading, and I probably would have put a link in to this thread anyway.

When my son's 2008 HHR SS fan/module failed, I bought a whole new assembly (fan with control module) from Rock Auto for I think $170.

I was concerned that the fan might be failing and drawing more current, which could take out the new module.
