More info on fuel needed for our HHRS
Fuel
Use of the recommended fuel is an important part of
the proper maintenance of this vehicle. To help keep
the engine clean and maintain optimum vehicle
performance, we recommend the use of gasoline
advertised as TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline.
Look for the TOP TIER label on the fuel pump to
ensure gasoline meets enhanced detergency standards
developed by auto companies. A list of marketers
providing TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline can be found
at www.toptiergas.com.

All sales hype.
The fuel sold at various brand name stations comes from the same refinery the lessor known brands come from.
The driver of the tank truck actually dumps a bottle of "XXX majic potion" into the tank so that the advertising has some 'merit'.
Ask anyone in the petro chemical industry. Top Tier advertising is a gimmick to get more money out of your pocket.

I use to work for Enco/Esso/Exxon in Martinez/Benicia , CA, all base gas is the same, however the additive package is added withe fuel at the dispensing nozzle and there is a difference in how the gasolines perform in areas of knock suppression and cleaning ability. These additives can add substantially to the cost of formulation.

to me it does not matter if its sales hype or not I normaly fill up at mobil its just
sells me more on mobil that chevy is saying the engine will stay cleaner.
BTW I used to work at many gas stations and none of the drivers had ever added anything to the fuel before off loading the trucks. I know you can see a differance
between regular and high test of name brand fuels the 87 octane allways has a
dark yellow color and high test is mostly clear in comparison. knowing this is true of all
good quality fuels I will allways use what the manufacture suggest.

But it lacked "pizazz".
After fighting a subtle mis-fire in my GTO and my buddies M3 getting $2000 in warranty work to fix his mis-fire (to no avail), we both stopped using Arco and off-brands and switched to Chevron and Shell. Problem solved. Switched back and the mis-fire returned. It wasn't huge but you could hear it mainly at idle in the exhaust. His M3 had it worse. BMW said they suspected the fuel in the end recommended the switch.
Whatever the difference, it worked. Valero and Philips have been fine too. I haven't run anything other than Shell and Chevron in the SS so I don't know if it's sensitive like the LSx and M3 engines.
