Treat the cold air intake hose (aka “wooly worm”) with great care. They tend to be fragile in their old age, so disconnect it carefully before removing the air box. Unplug the MAF sensor first too, and remember to plug it back in when you’re done.
I've always taken that hose off the air cleaner (leaving it attached to the manifold). I've seen numerous posts and such that go the other way. I always felt my method was fractionally better, less chance of dropping anything down the manifold.
Now if carid would get off their ass and actually *ship* the damn parts. In stock and a week & half to make it out the door. Starting to not to like them as much these days. (other orders have been the same)
Worked on our 1987 Mustang Gt 5.0L, 5 speed. I factory ordered it back in 1987.
Last year the transmission broke after some (paced 70mph max) laps at Watkins Glen. Third gear, the main weakness of the Borg-Warner T-5 manual trans, broke. Luckily it was a few miles from home when it broke.
Does this gear look damaged?
The T-5 was rated for around 320lb-ft of torque, while the engine put out 300lb-ft stock. It lasted pretty well for 34 years.
Years ago, Borg Warner sold their transmission lines to Tremec. Instead of replacing the trans with a new Tremec T-5, I am putting a newly designed Tremec TKX transmission in. The TKX fits in the Mustang and is rated at 600lb-ft of torque maximum. That will come in handy for future supercharging mods.
My 93 Chevy Suburban is a ½ ton, with a 5.7L. I have actually managed to get 20mpg on a road trip, which amazes me.
I use it for hauling carpentry tools, to work on various projects around the farm. It looks like hell, but I maintain the important bits - engine, drivetrain, brakes, etc. It only has 109,000 miles.
I've thought about selling it, but would get nothing for it, and I'd have to replace it with something equally capable. So I'm keeping it.

I had a 1994 1/2 ton Suburban with the (throttle-body injection) 5.7L V8. Yes, it could get 20mpg on trips if you didn't go real fast. Then we got a 8K lb travel trailer to replace our popup camper, which meant more towing capacity needed, hence the 2002 3/4 ton.
The 2002 3/4 Ton has 250K miles and runs great but the rockers are rusting out. I removed the 3rd seat and use it to haul lumber from Home Depot for projects.
The 2005 3/4 ton was bought a couple of years ago from a dealer in Idaho. The sub spent its life in Nevada and California so there is no rust. It had 230K miles, but it runs great. I don't care about the high mileage as I can repair or replace anything cheaply (even engine or transmission), but rust is a losing battle once it starts. It gets about 12mpg but has a tow rating of 12K lbs. Fortunately I bought it before the crazy used car prices that started shortly after. I only paid $7400 for it, top of the line loaded LT model with a pristine interior.

Anxiously checking weather forecasts, hoping to get the SS out, but the local yokels keep dumping brine on the roads at the slightest hint of ice or snow. Need a good rain to make the roads safe for valued hardware.
Got the Panel out today & we went shopping for new living room furniture.. We are focusing on rich brown leather, for the couch & a 'wall-hugger' recliner,
My recliner however I would like in a hi-back full electric. with heated massage. We'll see..
