In our case, I'm teaching the wife to drive stick. It's a challenge for my neck muscles, but she is getting better.
She's a bit leery about learning on a brand new car, but I keep telling her that manual transmissions are almost bulletproof - so she probably can't hurt it.
Now my tires - that's a different story...
(her practicing starting on a hill tends to leave some of my tires on the road)

According to the 2008 production numbers the SS sold way more sticks (28.1%) than all the other HHR's. Wish I had one. They sound like there killer fun!
Here it the link to the 2008 production number's for those who haven't seen it.

So far this poll has been alot of fun to read. I love to hear everyone's input.
I'm 50 years old and my last car was the first and and only Automatic tranny I will ever owen. (Good health willing) I have always owned a Muscle or sport car and a stick is the only way to go. I let my wife talk me into the auto. "Mistake"
It took my Chevy dealer 4 weeks to track down a stick the color I wanted.

By the way, the only problem with having 2 HHRs one with auto and one with manual, is slamming the wife into the seat belt when I drive her auto and come to a stop sign. Of coarse I push in the clutch to coast

It is interesting as of tonight and using the 2008 production numbers. That says the ratio is 95% Auto's to 5% sticks, but the poll shows we have 45 autos to 40 of the "5" speeds and 5 members that have autos wishing they had the 5 speed.
Either a lot of members are not voting or our group heavily leans toward the hands on driving style.
I really thought the numbers would be like 75% or 80% automatic tranny's

I have seen many who are over 50 and others that are Female with an SS and nearly everyone is Auto.
I also see two distinct groups on this webs site. One who name their cars and look for things like wood grain or retro/custom modifications and one who wants more power /boost, new sway bars and other perfromance based mods.
THe HHR group is a much more diverse group than most vehicles and the SS has brought in a whole new sub set in. THat is a very good sign for the HHR, CHevy and this web site.
One other factor in my choice of an auto is I keep my cars 10 years. I have has the experience of FWD cable shifters geting lose and worn out. Also if it is a RWD I can change the clutch and I can not change a FWD myself.
