We just got back from a 4000 mile trip (from West Central Arkansas to the Adirondack Mts of NY and back). Mileage on I40 from Ar thru tennesee at 69mph with cruise was 35-36mpg. On I81 from Virginia to Minerva,NY was 36-37!!!
Checked by DIC and my handy calculater.( speed was 64-65 with cruise)
Found the DIC to be very accurate, within 3 tenths of a mile.
I was able to confirm a suspicion that I had had for some time.
New Yorks gas sucks!
The car was driven for a couple of days with the gas in it from the last fill in Pennsylvania and everything was fine.As soon as I filled in NY, the mileage dropped! The best I could get( on I87) was 33.5.We are glad to be home now
We really like this little car!!!!! It performed flawlessly, Great mileage,Rode better than I expected and the 2.2L was so quiet I sometimes wondered if it was running.
It now has 10k on it and I'm dumping the oil this morning( not the first time of course)
This site helped us make the decision to buy it and we are eternally gratefull for all the info posted here

Wow...that's awesome mileage. Thanks for sharing that info with us.

to chevyhhr.net...the best place online for anything HHR.

Glad to know we were so helpful in making your decision to purchase the HHR. This is a great group of people with tons of knowledge, lots of ideas and a myriad of opinions (like you haven't figured that one out...)

We look forward to seeing you around the boards and hearing more about you and your HHR. Don't forget to post some pictures...the natives get restless when you don't.

Nothing fancy to post pictures of. Just a plain LS. However!
Thanks to this site I have added the running boards and am happy to say there is no sand blasting to the rear wheel wells.
Also checked the fuses, yes, they were all loose with two of them being ****ed sideways. and I even learned how to install the cargo net!
I hope that Chevy reads this: The clincher in the purchase of this car was the location of the oil filter.
We had looked at Toyota( I have a Tundra) and several other brands but since I do my own oil changes I nearly fell over when I learned( also from this site) that the filter was on top and " front and center"
Yes this site is great and the info just keeps on coming.

fwiw if I don't run the a/c I and keep it ~70-75 average I can get 32mpg very easily with a mix of city and hwy.

To get the thirty and above you have to average at least above 40. The longer you run at 60mpg and under cruise control. is when you get the 30 and above mpg.

I had/have an 04 Vibe I'm trading for an 07 HHR. I was surprised to read how you hated your Vibe. I LOVED mine and the gas mileage will never be met by the HHR. I never got less than 23-24mpg with strictly city diving and usually 32-33 on the highway at 65mph. In the 3 years I owned it, I only had one single problem, the door ajar light stayed on..turned out to be a capacitor. I pray I'll be as happy with the HHR...but don't expect to match the Vibes mpg.

Mpg

i have a 2.4 5 speed. going to ca from vegas, i've been getting right at 30mpg. i now have about 6800 miles on my pride and joy! its my understanding, that when the motor has 10,000 miles on it, the computer changes motor settings. the timing and fuel mix are changed. has any one heard of this? the service guy at my chevy dealer told me this. think milage is different from 5 speed vs auto?

Have had my HHR for almost two weeks and have checked the last 2 tanks. I am averaging 28-30 in mixed driving here in upstate NY. I am very impressed so far. I have the 2.4 l LT1 with auto tranny. Have tried not to hammer it too much but.........

Improved Gas Mileage

I have been gone since Monday, we had to make a quick trip to Ohio for a funeral. We drove the HHR 2.4L Automatic with CGS Intake and Anti-sway bar, with 8,400 miles on the HHR. We traveled light, just my wife and I, with no Thule Roof Rack/Basket. It is a 1000 mile roundtrip.

I saw a gain in gas mileage from this summer's trip. Identical Trip, Interstate 77 through the mountains of North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia to Ohio with the outside temperature being about the same. Only had to run AC a couple of times on both trips.

On the trip this summer we averaged 28.5 mpg fully loaded down with myself, wife, adult daughter, and 60 lb irish setter, plus a fully loaded roof rack, and on the same trip yesterday it registered 33.5 mpg. I do keep my foot out of it most of the time, except on the long uphill climbs, and I try and drive between 65 and 70. I expected some improvement without the rack and less weight, but not that much. I am very very satisfied, just thought I would share the improvement. The only change from this summer to the HHR was the new "outlaw" air filter for my CGS and the small magnetic flames. Do you think that helped with the improved gas mileage?

Also, for gas in Ohio, 89 octane, paid $2.29 and when I get back to Charlotte we are still paying $2.79.

I am glad to be back, I missed reading all of the posts.

John
