NOW there's a power steering recall on GM vehicles?! No, it's a warranty extension!
The very last sentence, just above the signature references the bulletin.
When I heard of the first recall for the Ignition switch the 2008 HHR was not listed in the news story. Just up to and including the 2007. My dealer had no information on a recall for my vehicle and I felt safe.
Then on March 31 CBS reported on another recall for the HHR for the steering defect that would cause the power steering to cut out. It was reported to affect HHR model 2010 and earlier. I went to the dealer the following Monday to check it out.
They had no information on the power steering defect, and copied the story that I had printed out to take in. I have always had this car serviced at this dealer even though I did not buy it from them and I've owned it for over 5 years. It shocked me that I was told to take even the fob that came with the car to open the doors with off because the weight of it might cause the switch to cut off. I had not received a recall letter and that recall was public knowledge for up the 2007, several months ago. Today I finally got a recall notice from Chevrolet on the ignition switch, but they do note that parts are not readily available at this time. The dealer says they are coming in very slow, just one or two at a time for the specific car they were made for. Does not mention the other recall.
But even more frightening it makes note that even without the key fob it can switch to the off position "if the car experiences rough road conditions or other jarring or impact related events." It's spring time in Kentucky following a rough winter. We've got potholes galore and rough road. What makes me very upset though is that while I felt safe after having been told our car was not under the recall that I drove two of my grandchildren in that car. My grandson even drove it while practicing for his drivers license.
Up until this time we enjoyed this car. The only problem I had with it was the position of the window buttons. They are not on the door at fingertip level, instead they are low in the middle console. Under the radio and heat control switches. I love the fact that the back seat and even the front passenger seat can lower to carry large items, without needing a truck. It has great gas mileage and when people have asked me about it I have showed it's features off, including that it sits higher than most small cars. You have a better view of the road, but right now, I don't feel safe in it. It's parked in my driveway and will stay there until it's fixed. I'm furious that according to the senate hearings, the difference in price between this ignition switch and a safer one was just one dollar. It really doesn't make me think that Chevy will be the first place I look for our next car.

Please read the entire 7 pages of this thread. And the Ignition Recall thread has some 26 pages in it.
You will find that your dealer will most likely give you a loaner until you ignition is fixed.
It is just good policy to read threads before you post comments to them.

kinda humorous, gotta share:
went to dealership last week and asked him about the recall notice.
he said "parts are coming". (btw:i've known/dealt with this particular service manager for nearly 20 years now. good guy).
so I said "do you still have the records of the last ignition switch issue you fixed for me? i think i've got a reimbursement coming."
he says "yep. but that was a cylinder. the recall is for your ignition switch."
producing the letter, I read to him , "well..........says here 'if you have paid to have your vehicle's ignition switch OR IGNITION CYLINDER replaced, please complete the enclosed reimbursement form."
"oh........that's news to me!" he said with a chuckle.
i'm confident he'll take care of things.

We were offered a loaner car, finally. Not on the first day I went in to question the other recall, but yesterday (10 days later) when I went in to see how long it will take for the replacement part and only after I talked to a manager. We did not accept because we do have a second car. I have read all the other messages. It also does not make me feel safe when the other recall for the power steering does not show for my car but was announced in CBS news report. The link you provided to check out the VIN numbers was very good and I will keep checking it for the power steering recall.

I stand corrected. It was not an official recall but a letter from GM Canada stating that "they have decided there is a defect which may relate to vehicle motor safety, may exist in certain 2006 model year Chevrolet HHR vehicles equipped with electric power steering." They go on to explain the DIC will show a PWR STR message with a chime and additional steering effort will be required the slower the vehicle is moving. Kind of like when you break a power steering belt on a conventional hydraulic older vehicle power steering. Also they go on to say they are providing a 10 year or 240,000 kilometers extended warranty on the power steering motor. Sorry for the confusion as the letter head looked exactly like the ones used for recalls.
