Correct, that is exactly what is done. The kit is generic, ordering by vin is only for inventory control.

My dealer has my ignition parts in now, but I decided to wait until the power steering motor also comes in so I can get both installed in the same visit. When I asked if they would use 'my' parts to pacify another needy customer in the meantime, he said it can't happen - that they are ordered for that VIN and won't work in a different vehicle. Was that untrue?

I went by my dealership a few months ago regarding the ignition recall, after getting the first letter. They recorded the VIN and said they would call me when the part(s) came in. I had another issue, so stopped by again about a month ago. They said it was probably related to the switch, so they did not want to work on the vehicle twice. I went by about a week ago. I'm getting nervous, as I only have about 1,000 miles left on my extended service plan. They told me if I was on "the list" I would be called when my parts came in. I asked if they would check this list, to make sure I got on it. He said if you are on the list, we will call you when the parts come in. The other issues include: I have lost the sounds; turn signal clicks, door chimes, etc. Driver side front speaker is out. (Both are out only in the morning. In the hot afternoon, both work again.) The TAP on the PCM needs to be reset again. My outside mirrors won't stay folded in. Not all of these are related to the ignition. (Duh.)

I called GM today. (It was a looong wait on hold before talking with someone.) The man at GM called the dealership, and transferred me to someone at the dealership. This person then confirmed I was on the list, but the parts were not in. He said for me to come in tomorrow and at least get my other issues documented, if not fixed.

I now hope the dealership doesn't treat me badly because I went "above their heads".

You have an HHR with folding mirrors? I did not know that was ever an option.
Your other concerns have NOTHING to do with the ignition.
Third party extended warranties don't limit you to going to a GM shop.
If you had told them that you "fear for your life" they would give you a loaner until the job is done.

Have you read any of this thread?
You asked for comments.

When I checked my VIN on the recall section of the GM website sunday night it showed "replacement parts not available" now it shows "customer phased mailing" so apparently the parts are being sent out.

I just had my ignition re-done yesterday, and asked about this while I was there. They said my 2008 was not included.
