Bad Gas and Tune Do Not Mix
Bad Gas and Tune Do Not Mix
Got some bad gas at a local Mobil station. Ignition retard warning on Aeroforce guage was lighting up at more than 4 degrees retard at modest boost, (normally never lights up) and throttle response was soggy, and did not dare go over about 1/3 throttle. Had to dump in two gallons of Toluene to get things back to normal. Either dealer or distributor was dishonest and put 87 octane in 91 octane tank, or somebody was just stupid (no, not me, I have the receipt for 91 octane). Hate the fact that I don't have any easy recourse other than not go to that station any more.
You DO have recourse. In CA, if you suspect you got mislabeled or bad gas, immediately contact your county's Department of Weights and Measures. They are the folks who certify scales and pumps and they will respond to the gas station to take samples and have the authority to immediately padlock any pumps dispensing foul or mislabeled product.
In 1982, I once got water and dirt contaminated fuel at an Arco station that brought my brand new VW Scirocco to a grinding halt. When I went back to the station hours later, the attendants refused to talk to me. A patron overheard the conversataion and advised me to call the county. Within an hour, a Weights and Measures tech arrived and after stabbing the station's tank with a specially coated stick, padlocked all their pumps. That got the attention of the owner who was summoned by phone and he in turn gave me the station's insurance information. They had to pay for about $3k in repairs to my car.
