I bought the 2LT with automatic so I could install a trailer hitch and pull a trailer if I need to haul something really dirty!! Works just great!

And get really good gas mileage to boot!

I know what you are going through. I was leasing a Hummer H3 that I turned in early yesterday and bought a HRR SS. The Hummer was awesome and was the best vehicle I ever owned. It was just that I only really needed it to tow something 5 or 6 times a year so it seemed excessive. The HHR SS will do everything I need to except tow. I cant live with a sedan. So this year I will rent a truck if I need it and look to buy a $5,000 - 6,000 truck next year. G.B.

I insisted on keeping my 99 V6 S10 when I got Blackie. I LOVE that truck and it has kept me in good steed for years, but only really used it to haul stuff maybe a dozen times. I love having a good back-up vehicle when needed.

I swear at least once a month someone wants to buy him off of me.

Switching to the HHR was a no brainer--i wanted to be able to carry more then my Chi-meranion, Maximo with me, and when I saw this car at a dealer in 2005, I said this WILL BE my next car...don't feel I lost too much power, the mileage is great and is cute as heck! I absolutely LOVE this car and you will not regret it.

Maybe twice a year I could justify my truck, but as a daily commuter, and family car, it was a un-economical choice on my part. But at the time $3 Gas was never going to happen. , 6 years ago they were offering (at the time) great deals on trucks/ full size SUV's. So I bought into that mentality...hey... why not have a 40K truck. But times have changed.. and THE WORLD has changed . Well after trading in my EXPENSIVE truck for something great on gas that is fun to drive. I feel, well LIBERATED! like I wish GM had these choices back then.. G5, G6, HHR, The 2.2 ecotec. and superchared I4. Everyone thinks and say, What was the Big 3 thinking? with all the Big suv's?.. I want to laugh, because they all(big3) had great fuel-efficent offering's, but people (like Me) were'nt interested. FORD Focus.. DCX Neon..(PT cruiser).. GM/Saturn (anything with a 4banger). But we were't (including Me) interested. This is just the tip of the iceberg, MPG is whats selling now and the big three DO have vehicles to compete, Especially "Pontiac". Believe it or not the USA car company's will be the best at MPG and Quality very soon,

The trucks (real trucks and real SUVs) are allready there....can you beat 36mpg sticker in a cavy? For that price? Or the vette at 29mpg highway with 400+HP....compare that to a Benz,Merc, Audi or Infini.........And if you have a problem with GM quality, sit in a malibu....problem solved!

But back on the subject..Get an old beater 4x4 for the few times you really need it.....put 90% of your money where you use it (HHR) and the 10% where you don't (4X4/truck bed). It's hard to get back into my 2000 s10 after cruisin in my SS.

Like most that posted in this thread, most of the vehicles I've owned have been 4x4s, the last being as '89 Cherokee. Was really great for some of the street flooding, but other than that I rarely used it for it's purpose. Nearly 3 years later, no regrets........Just have to go around some of the deeper puddles now!

Here's the beauty - when I get an HHR SS, I'll still have my Avalanche for all the truck duties!

Wife has an Xterra... dogs (including my best buddy-- a Great Dane) go in the Xterra. The only thing that's every been in the back of the HHR is an empty box I was taking to the recycle bin at work. Only thing I expect to ever have in the back seat area are a few shirts from the cleaners hanging on the hook. We just relocated to Moss Beach, CA, and the house has a compacted gravel driveway... I'm already looking at how I can talk the owner into pouring concrete.

I have a '89 S'Rado that I can't seem to part with either..family member I think.. been paid off forever now and have this fear that as soon as I sell her I will need her back ....over 306k and cranking. I can load 2 bikes in the back and pull 24 mph and 75mph with air.(5.7 auto ext cab long bed..just under 5k lbs) Was considering just hitching up the HHr to pull the bike around but.....since the milage would be around the same....think I'll keep my lowered beast..

So after trading my Silverado (great truck) in the nick of time price-wise, and although my neighbor and my brother are happy to loan me their trucks in exchange for filling the tanks, I am still in a bit of withdrawal at being "truckless" for the first time since 1972. There is a clean 2006 3/4 ton 4WD Silverado standard cab long bed locally that is now down to $13,000 asking after starting at $18,000, so if it works out it will be mine this weekend for $9500. I think the deals won't last long, the prices for trucks are getting ridiculous.

I worked for Standard Oil in the 70's and haven't owned a full sized truck since 87.Kind of felt them sneeking the price up for years over and above the average inflation rate .I still see so many big rigs at work "We need it to pull our boat or camper" ( 3 times a year-lame excuse).I still haven't sold my 01 S/10 xtreme black with yellow stripe (just won 1st place at the local Toys for Tots car show-even with 32000 miles on it) . It's going to be hard for me to do-I'll really miss that truck. My wife says I won't because I still have my 94 S/10 SS with 21000 miles on it to use. My point is that we haven't own anything that wouldn't get mid 20's and higher mileage for over 20 years! Just couldn't justify it and didn't need a big rig to make a fashion statement. People really need to access their transportion needs justly before buying or even deciding to keep what they currently own ! Sometimes the pay back won't suport the purchase price . As the price of gas is dropping I see some people falling right back into their old feulish ways !Seem like it's a nasty cycle for them and they will never learn to NOT trust big oil companies ! I can't help wonder if the lower prices aren't something secrectly agreed upon by the Dem and Rep and big oil-until the election is over. Lookout in Jan 09 !!--KATZUP
